How to Heal from Your Own Birth Story
Jan 24, 2023EPISODE 5 SHOW NOTES
The way you experience entering the world truly matters, and it actually has a lot to do with your unconscious beliefs around birth (whether those beliefs are positive or negative). I’m excited to kick off more birth storytelling with you here by sharing my OWN birth story. I have healed from my personal birth experience, and it was vital for me to do so I could find peace, strength, and ultimately, release certain fears I was holding on to.
I've actually gone into and done the work to learn about my birth, and heal my birth. My actual birth was fine overall, but the days following my birth were pretty traumatic (once I left my mother's womb). My mom experienced several major setbacks after having me (she almost died twice actually), and I was separated from her more than once. I learned that the fear of abandonment I've experienced throughout my life (especially in my postpartum periods with my babies) stem back to my personal birth story. I had to do some powerful work with somatoemotional release in craniosacral therapy in order to unveil and heal from the trauma I experienced after being born.
I want you to understand that your unconscious beliefs around birth can greatly impact your labor, delivery, and postpartum period, and I've experienced all of this firsthand.
In today’s episode, I’m sharing more about 3 ways you can help heal yourself from your own birth story, which are:
- Ask your mom her birth story (if you have access to her). Make sure to get all of the little details too-not just if it was a 'good' or 'bad' experience. Ask questions about how you looked, if you cried a lot, if you seemed peaceful, what the room was like, etc.. Don't be afraid to keep an open mind and get curious here, because it will really help the entire process!
- Sit with what you feel in your body when you think about birth. Really try relaxing your mind and your body, and think about what sensations are coming up for you. You're not here to work on them or let them go right now-you're just going to pay attention and understand that they're there. Again, getting very specific on details with how you're feeling is important too!
- Guide yourself through your own rebirthing meditation. I actually do this for my students in my childbirth course, and it is unlike anything else. Once you're able to do this, you can find freedom from the grips that your story has held over you (even if you didn't realize it).
Healing from your own birth story may not be easy, but it's something that must be done in order for you to heal and thrive in your birth and postpartum periods.
You cannot fully accept and soak in the education and information about physiologic birth if you still hold gripping fears around giving birth (even if your conscious mind can’t remember, your subconscious does). This is why I always start my childbirth classes off by releasing fears and restructuring deep-rooted beliefs you may have around birth.
If you’re starting with your birth journey, please don’t take this information lightly-it is foundational work that you MUST do when you’re preparing to give birth. I promise you-it’s truly amazing what healing, awareness, and ease you can gain when you do this, and I can’t wait to hear what shifts you experience once you do so!
